For this class, I have completed an essay (my signature assignment) regarding the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and applied four different examples that involved four different themes (Freedom, Responsibility, and Justice; Identity, Privilege, and Inequalities; Death; and Sacredness, Spirituality, and Morality). The file contains my essay along with my reflection, but I have also posted it directly onto here as a text space below the word document.

HUMA 1100 ePortfolio Paper - DOMA.doc Size : 49 Kb Type : doc |
Within the Humanities course, what I found as a proper base for understanding my interests and future desires to gain knowledge was the integration of psychological thought and analysis of certain topics that allow a variety of understandings and interpretations of different subjects. The most interesting part of the course was the subject matter, and how the discussions on them related to people’s lives, ideology, and cultures. What helped me the most in the course to move me forward in the direction of knowledge was the application of extended philosophy and sociology in literary and documented works; these concepts coincide with the curriculum of my European history and English literature classes in my high school, which made the analysis of certain documents much more interesting to discover and evaluate on. This course has helped me make progress towards my goals as a human being by allowing me to discover how my opinions and my role in the society I live in affects those around me, as well as how I should apply my ideas towards the events that take place in the world. It has also helped me find a more solid justification for my opinions and reasons, allowing me to compare them to others and find where the differences lie. Personally, the only challenge of this assignment was the application of one of the themes of the readings to the subject matter, specifically the theme, “death.” I was unable to find a proper way to apply the philosophy of death to DOMA; so instead, I simply evaluated the techniques of one of the subjects (Socrates) and applied that to the ideology involved with same-sex marriage. This paper reflects my mastery of this humanities course with the evaluations and analysis of the research I found, and the assessment of how my opinions reflect how I think. If I became personally invested in an issue similar to the one addressed in this paper, I would further my cause by sharing my opinions and reasons with solid justifications and proper rhetorical analysis that encourages change toward the matter.
